Southern Mens League Match 5 Sutton Vallence
On a sunny day in Kent, SMRAC came fourth just three points away from second place. The team of 15 athletes came up against some strong track performances but picked up good points in the field.
Jonny Brown and Ben Wood made their debuts for the club and chipped in excellently for the team. Jonny doubled up on the shortest and longest distances on the track (100m, 4*100m and 5,000m) while Ben competed in the 200m, long jump, 4*100m and moved straight to the top of the triple jump rankings with 11.97m for second place in the A-string. Ben was joined by Joe Cumberbatch who won the B-string triple jump as well as running the 100m and 4*100 relay.
Grant Bridgman ran an excellent 63.0 seconds in the 400m hurdles, came second in the javelin, fifth in the 400m and joined Harry McCulloch, Sathira Don and Jonathan Winney in the 4*400m relay. Chris Brook came fourth in the B-string 400m hurdles and second in the 3,000m steeplechase. The 1,500m saw Adam Villard come third in the A-string and Harry McCulloch second in the B-string.
Anthony Jackson ran the best part of 9km with a PB in the 800m (2:01.9), the 3,000m steeplechase and the 5,000m! He was joined by Ed Smith in the 800m who is the first SMRAC athlete under 2 minutes this season (1:59.9). It was a measure of the competitiveness on the track that Ed’s performance was only good enough for fifth place.
In the field the throwers picked up 35 of the 40 points on offer. Adam Richardson and Neil Jennings doubled up in the shot (two firsts – Neil Jennings PB of 10.68m), discus (two seconds) and hammer (first and second). Richardson and Jennings also doubled up in the 110m hurdles (third and first) while Richardson came third in the B-String pole vault. Kieran Hipkins came second in the B-string javelin and picked up a PB of 30.80m in the non-scoring discus.
Mervyn Glover and Jonathan Winney jumped 1.90m and 1.70m respectively for two second places in the high jump. Glover also competed in the 200m while Winney came third in the pole vault and completed the 4*100 quartet.
Adam Richardson and Neil Jennings shared the most-valuable player/athlete of the day award by amassing 20 points each for the team.
