Southern Mens League Match 4 report St Mary’s

SMRAC picked up fourth place in the fourth Southern Mens League match of the season at St Mary’s on 9th July. SMRAC fielded their biggest team of the season (21 athletes) but came up against tough opposition.

Five athletes made their debut for the SML team and performed admirably (James Bell, Kyle Powell, Ben Gibbons, Sathira Don and Jonathan Winney). The opposition proved particularly strong on the track with SMRAC limited to second place at best in the 3,000 Steeplechase (Marc Snaith) and 5,000m (Anthony Jackson). The team fared slightly better in the field with wins in the discus (Paul Derrien), hammer (Neil Jennings, B-string) and javelin (Kieran Hipkins, B-string with a 46.48m PB!).

Both relay teams posted season best performances. The 4*100m team of Mervyn Glover, Joseph Cumberbatch, Powell and Bell finished in 46.6secs while the 4*400m team of Jackson, Grant Bridgman, Harry McCulloch and Jacques Ezzeldin finished in 3:48.4mins.

Notable mentions must go to Gary Palmer and Trevor Cummings for rolling back the years and picking up fourth places in the 400m and 3,000m steeplechase B-Strings respectively, Felix Shiel for doubling up on the 5,000m and 400m, Adam Richardson for equalling his PB in the 110m hurdles and Chris Brook for fourth place in the 400H (and more importantly the Brook family 400m hurdles bragging rights!)

Paul Derrien picked up 18.5 points for the most-valuable player/athlete of the day on his last appearance in the Southern Mens League this season.

Thanks to Kim, Robin, John, Chris and everyone who helped out to make things run smoothly on the day.

Results: 1st Bexley 139 points; 2nd Thurrock 108.5 points; 3rd Hercules Wimbledon 101.5 points; 4th St Mary’s 95 .5 points;  5th North Devon 90.5 points.

The next meeting is tomorrow meeting at St Mary’s at 9.30am for the trip to Sutton Valance school near Maidstone (map here).
