Southern Mens League Match 2 report

A team of 10 crack commando athletes trekked their way up to Ipswich for the second Southern Mens League match of the season. Thanks to everyone chipping in, the team finished a creditable third narrowly behind Ryston and just ahead of Thames Valley Harriers.

Anthony Jackson once again smashed a number of PBs in the 800m (2:02.1), 5,000m (16:03.9) and 400m (55.9s). He was joined in the longer distances by Adam Villard who got valuable points in the 800m (2:13.9) and 1,500 (4:30.5), Harry MuCulloch (1500m – 4:35.0) and Marc Snaith (400H – 64.0s, 5,000k - 17:45.1 and 3,000SC – 11:15.6). Grant Bridgman completed the team in the longer distances picking up an important second place in the 3000mSC (12:51.7) after winning the javelin (49.06m) with his last throw and holding on for third place in the 400H (66.9s).

In the jumps the team were pleased to see Chris James return and take good points in the high jump (1.75m), long jump (5.46m), triple jump (10.84m) and 100H (21.0s). Mervyn continued his 100% record in the high jump with a comfortable win (1.85m) and helped the team out in the 100m (12.1s) and 200m (26.9s).

In the field Adam Richardson had an impressive shot (12.04m) and discus (36.26m) with decent points also picked up in the 110H (21.7s), long jump (5.13m) and 100m (12.7s). Paul Derrien won the shot (10.89m), came second in the discus (36.02m), third in the hammer (42.66m) and fourth in the triple jump (9.84m). Neil Jennings came second in the javelin (42.78m) and hammer (37.47m) and fourth in the 200m (26.9s) and 400m (61.1s). He also picked up a PB of 10.52m in the non-scoring shot.

The day ended with the 4*100 team of Glover, Bridgman, Richardson and Jennings finishing 3rd in 48.5s and a rather tired 4*400 team of McCulloch, Bridgman, Richardson and Jackson finishing 4th in 4:10.7.

Once again the team performed as best they could on the day but dropped too many points in the sprints.

A massive thanks must go to Robin for driving us all the way to Ipswich and back, to Kim for managing the merry band of athletes, and to Bob and Pete for officiating on the day.

The next Southern Mens League is on Saturday 4th June in Windsor. Click here for the full results and here for the latest inter-athlete points standings.
