Masters Match 1 report
The SMRAC masters league season got under way in weather more suited to a summer afternoon than a Monday evening in May, but the athletes were certainly not complaining as the warm weather brought good competition and a number of good individual performances.
Gary Palmer was the one of two individual winners on the night for SMRAC, clinching victory in the M40 High Jump with a leap of 1.64m which lifts Palmer up to number 4 in the UK ranking in his age group. Palmer also went on the place second in the 100m (12.5 secs), third in the shot (7.38m), third on the long jump (4.80m) and fourth in the discus (22.18m) in what was a rather busy evening!
Robin Roach was the other winner in SMRAC colours, winning the M60 shot put with a throw of 8.52 metres.
Ralph Hyde claimed two second places for the club, in both the ‘b’ string 100m (12.8 secs) and 400m (58.6 secs) respectively, whilst Roy White opened his league campaign for 2011 with a third place in the M60 100m with a time of 14.8 secs, before placing second in the long jump with 3.83m.
Peter Robinson had his usual busy evening, recording 16.2 for fourth in the M50 100m, 23.53m for third in the discus, 1.35m for second in the high jump, 3.34m for third in the long jump and finally 4.90m for fifth in the shot put.
Masters League debutant Chris Brook paid a little for going with the fast early pace in the 1500m, but still recorded a solid 5.04.9 mins in placing fourth. Brooks also enjoyed two good performances in the field, throwing 18.59m in the discus and 4.60m in the long jump.
The men’s team finished fourth in the match with 67 points, a long way behind winners Herne Hill but just a few points off third placed Serpentine.
The SMRAC ladies team consisted of two athletes. Whilst the team were to place a disappointing sixth in the match, both Susan Palmer and Jennifer Eldridge were very competitive in their individual events.
Susan placed third in the M40 100m in a time of 15.5 secs, before collecting two more third places in the discus (14.06) and shot (6.56) respectively.
Jennifer placed second in the W60 shot (5.50m) and then third in the discus (14.35m)
Match two takes place at Battersea Park again on Monday 6th June. All club members aged over 35 are eligible to compete, so please make an effort to be there! For more details email Gary.
