SWL 7th August- Match Report and Results

Nine brave and dedicated athletes turned out for the SMRAC women's team on a day of variable weather conditions in Basingstoke to take on the top three teams in the SWL Senior Division 2.  While we finished fourth on the day, we simultaneously gained valuable match points in our quest for a top five finish to the season.

Liz Kipling's 3000m run (9:51.8 - 1st A string) was the highlight of the day as she not only beat a stellar field but also set a PB and smashed her own club record in the process.  Liz's third place performance in the B string Hammer showed that she is undoubtedly the best hammer throwing distance runner in the SWL (or best distance running hammer thrower?).

Our other A string victory was delivered by the ever-reliable Kate Brook who won a tight battle in the 400m hurdles (68.6).  Kate also competed in the Long Jump producing a Season's Best (4.94m - 3rd A string), and gained valuable points for the team in the 100m hurdles, Triple Jump and High Jump.

Jimenez Joseph laughed and smiled her way to a multiple point scoring performance while also making significant progress on her knitting.  She also gained valuable points for the team in the Shot Put, Javelin, and 100m.

The throws were strongly represented with Sophie Jones delivering a B string victory in the Shot Put (7.40m), second place in the A string Hammer (27.11m), and third place in the A string discus.  Alvida Sadiqi made her SWL debut with a stellar B string victory in the Discus (21.50m) and exhibited strong performances in the Shot Put and Javelin.

The Major twins were their usual ubiquitous selves competing and excelling in a multitude of events throughout the day.  Lauren bravely doubled up with strong performances in the 3k (2nd B String - 11:42.8) and 1500m & also gained points in the High Jump.  Jocelyn ran a great 400m hurdles race (75.7), 800m and set a PB in the Long Jump of 4.46m putting her fourth overall on the 2010 SMRAC club rankings list for the event.

Rebecca Townsend showed her versatility returning to the track to garner points in the 800m, 400m, and 200m where she ran a fantastic PB of 31.5 in her third event of the day!

The team manager also returned from her injury induced one meet absence attempting the Pole Vault after only one practice session with vault guru Peter Robinson.  She set a PB in the event (2.10m - 2nd A string) and also competed in the Javelin, Triple Jump, and 200m.

The meet concluded with St. Mary's exhibiting their team cohesiveness by fielding teams and competing strongly in both the 4 x 100 (Kate, Sophie, Jimenez and Rebecca) and 4 x 400 (Kate, Jessica, Lauren, Jocelyn) relays.  Kate Brook was present on both of the teams as she begins to seek out winning relay combinations for next year's assault on the SWL title.

We would like the thank all of those who contributed transportation to the match after the mini-bus apparently overstayed its holiday (hopefully it was somewhere tropical).  The bus incident denied the team of disco lighting and 80's music; however, the overabundance of free snacks more than made up for this loss.  Thank you to Tim, Jim, Robin, Joe, Chris and Marc for their great officiating, support and running commentary.

The final SWL match will take place on Saturday, September 4th.  Snacks will be provided as well as music and disco lighting.  So come on ladies, if you haven't competed this season, there are no excuses this time.  Get out there and show support for your club in the last match of the season and help us to a top 5 finish in the league table.  Your team needs all of you for this one -- will you turn up?
